This was taken at the Jungfersprung waterfall in Austria on the way back from Croatia.
The location is surrounded in folktales, one of which being the legend that a young dairymaid was courted by several men trying to win her love but she refused them all. Then one day the Devil, disguised as a handsome stranger, followed her with a burning desire. The girl recognized him instantly and fled to preserve her virtue. She came nearer and nearer to the cliff's edge, a 130 meter drop, and still seeing no way of escape from her pursuer jumped to the bottom of the rock face; miraculously she survived unhurt and since then a beautiful waterfall has flowed there. Hence the name Jungfernsprung, "Maiden's Leap." |
